Governors -

The Governing Body has 13 Governors and the term for office for all Governors is 4 years. They are:-

Fran Beckett OBE - Foundation Governor & Chair

I’m delighted as a local resident to be able to support such an excellent school as St Andrew's. I’ve been a Foundation Governor since Easter 2018. I currently chair the HR Committee, and following a brief spell as Co-Chair became Chair of the Board in January 2020.

My work life has seen me setting up community projects, leading charities, and being on various. Government advisory and steering groups. I currently work as a charity consultant in leadership, governance, and strategy development; chair the Boards of three charities; and serve on the leadership team of One Church, Brighton. And in my spare time I write detective novels!

.

Candice Guy - Parent Governor

I have a daughter in Year 1 and a son in preschool, soon to join St. Andrew's next year. I’m excited to be part of the governing body and support our fantastic children, staff and school.

My experience as a former primary school teacher for over 14 years, coupled with being a parent has provided me with skills, knowledge and understanding that I can contribute to my role as parent governor and within the Teaching and Learning Committee.

Bryony Sandford - Staff Governor

I have been teaching now for 5 years, having trained in the inner-city of London. I joined St. Andrew's in 2017 and have taught in both Key Stage 1 and 2 and am a member of our Wellbeing committee.

Sue Coleman - Local Authority Governor

I became an LA governor in July 2018 and as it is a particularly challenging time for schools, especially with regard to finance; I am delighted to be able to use my skills, experience and knowledge to support this excellent school.

I have worked in Local Government finance (including schools finance) for over 30 years and for the last nine years (and ongoing) with Brighton & Hove City Council as an auditor.

Jill Fairbrother - Foundation Governor

I am an ex-parent of St. Andrew's school and a worshipper at St. Andrew's church where I regularly help with monthly brunch.  I am a part qualified accountant with a strong background in financial analytics.  In recent years I have been working closely with adults that have sustained brain injuries assisting them through their rehabilitation and vocational goals.  I sit on the Resource and Finance Committee.

Matthew Greenall - Associate Member

My work in supporting global AIDS, TB and malaria programmes takes me all over the world, and one of the main principles behind what I do is to make sure communities themselves have a say and play an active role in their services and institutions.

As a governor of St. Andrew’s I aim to make a contribution to my own community.  Both of my girls went to St Andrew's and my wife Claudia works in the SEN team in the school.

Reverend Dan Henderson

I'm Dan, the Vicar of St. Andrew's Church, Hove. I'm married to Jo and have three daughters, two of whom are still at St. Andrew's

I can often be found at school drop off and pick up being dragged by a large yellow Labrador.

Sophie Thomas - Headteacher

I feel very lucky and privileged to be the Headteacher of this amazing school. The children, staff and governors are a joy to work with and we have such a supportive parent/carer community. I began my journey here at St. Andrew’s in January 2019 and am coming up to the end of my third year here and I love it!  I have links with churches in East Sussex where I grew up and attend church where my father is an organist whenever I can.

I have been a Headteacher since 2007 and am also a National Leader of Education (NLE) where I have supported other schools across the south of England in a variety of areas such as leadership support and curriculum development. This work is always so interesting and I have learned so much from working with other leaders in many different contexts.

I am a Foundation Governor, having previously been Chair of Governors at St. Andrew's, for a number of years.

I have supported the school in a number of specific focus areas which include recruitment, HR and wellbeing, Finance and strategic leadership.

Professionally, I work in Executive Search and Consulting, advising on and delivering talent solutions.

I am a very proud father of 3 boys who currently attend St. Andrew's school.

Melissa Moore - Foundation Governor

I am a Foundation Governor at St. Andrew's.
Paul Roberts - Clerk to Governors
As Clerk to the Governors I provide support and advice to the Governing Body.
Joel Tomlinson - Parent Governor
Appointed 24th Oct 2019 until 23rd Oct 2023
Dwight Heffelfinger - Co-opted Governor

Appointed 28th Jan 2020 until 27th Jan 2024.

I am delighted to be a governor at St. Andrew's. I have 2 boys that attend the school, the eldest in Year 5 and the youngest in Year 2. Our family has been warmly welcomed and has become part of the school community since arriving to Brighton & Hove from New York City in 2018.

In my professional life, I lead a product development team for a global financial services firm, and I have been blessed to have worked and lived abroad. As a leader of a diverse team, fundamental to having strong engagement is demonstrating great respect for diversity, and equally valuing & considering different points of view to make informed decisions - all core values that apply equally to governorship.

It has been a pleasure partnering with the other governors and Senior Leadership Team at St. Andrew's, since I became governor in 2020. I look forward to collaborating further to continue providing a positive primary school experience to all pupils.'
Neil Bull - Foundation Governor

Appointed 21st Jan 2021 until 20th Jan 2025

I am excited to be a Foundation Governor. I have children at St. Andrew's, and I see first-hand their enjoyment of the school every day.

My career started as an Actuary and I then moved into fund management investing the Pension fund assets of a large multi-national.  In addition, I was Chair of the Trustee board of a large pension scheme for a number of years.  I currently work for the Pensions Regulator helping to protect Pension Plans in the UK.  I am a qualified Actuary and a CFA Charterholder.

In my spare time I love to Parkrun and to play football (both of which my body regularly tells me I am getting too old for).

I look forward to working with the other governors and the excellent senior leadership team at St Andrews to ensure the school continues to offer a wonderful experience for all children.

Chris Simmons - Foundation Governor

Appointed 21 Jul 2021 until 20th Jul 2024

I have a daughter at St. Andrew's with one more to come, and am so pleased to be able to contribute in some small way to the life of the school.  It's been a joy to watch my daughter grow up at St. Andrew's, being provided with a basis for learning, playing, making friends and music, that will hold her well in life.

I am a church pastor, married to my Siberian wife Natasha I met on a trip to Russia, in the late 1990's.  It's exciting to be a foundation governor, and to see the school developing and prospering with its great wealth of talent.

Christine Whiteside - Foundation Governor

I am delighted to be a member of St Andrew’s Primary School. I spent a number of years working in schools, having previously been a governor of two primary schools and a secondary school. I became a head of department and spent 13+ years in a large London secondary school after 14 years working with Homeless people. I am a person of faith and believe in equality for all.

I am looking forward to making positive contributions to the work of the school and all the challenges we have to overcome, turning them into beneficial opportunities for our community.
