What Do Governors Do?

Governors have a strategic role in guiding and supporting the school’s work and challenging further improvement, with the following key roles:

  • Ensuring that the school vision, ethos and strategy are clearly defined.
  • Ensuring that the Headteacher performs his/her responsibilities for the educational performance of the school.
  • Ensuring the proper and effective use of the schools budget.

There are three committees that meet once every half term:

1. Teaching and Learning; Catharine Buchanan (Chair), Oliver Mudge (Vice Chair), Nnamdi Udezue, Sophie Thomas (Headteacher)

2018/19 meeting dates: 27th September, 8th November, 11th January, 28th February, 2nd May, 20th June

2. Ethos and Pupil Wellbeing; Gordana Chapman (Chair), Fran Beckett, Father Dan Henderson (Ex-officio),  Lesley Hurst, Oliver Mudge, Sophie Thomas (Headteacher)

2018/19 meeting dates: 25th September, 5th November, 15th January, 25th February, 7th May, 24th June

3. Resources (Finance, Pay, Personnel, Premises); Jill Fairbrother (Chair), Sue Coleman, Matt Greenall, Lesley Hurst, Sophie Thomas (Headteacher)

2018/19 meeting dates: 11th September, 6th November, 8th January, 5th March, 30th April, 2nd July

Some Governors also sit on Panels for:

Head Teacher Appraisals

Admissions. As a church school, the Governing Body is the Admissions Authority which involves setting admissions arrangements for the school and agreeing admissions applications.

There are also Governors with special responsibility including Safeguarding with Child Protection, Health and Safety, Pupil Performance (Data Analysis), Safer Recruitment and SEN with Equalities and Training.

There is a high priority for Governors and the Diocese to attend training sessions organised by Brighton & Hove Local Authority to ensure they are able to carry out their role effectively.

There is an expectation for all governors to visit the school during the year to become familiar with school improvement priorities e.g. follow up staff presentations on curriculum development, equality, behaviour and learning. Governors also place a high priority on communicating with the school community and attend parent/teacher evenings and other school events, including the annual summer fair.
