GOVERNANCE

What Do Governors Do?

Governors have a strategic role in guiding and supporting the school’s work and challenging further improvement, with the following key roles:

  • Ensuring that the school vision, ethos and strategy are clearly defined.
  • Ensuring that the Headteacher performs his/her responsibilities for the educational performance of the school.
  • Ensuring the proper and effective use of the schools budget.

There are three committees that meet frequently throughout the school year:

1. Teaching & Learning:

Scope - responsible for holding executive leaders to account to educational performance of the organisation and its pupils.

Membership - Catharine Buchanan (Chair), Oliver Mudge, Nnamdi Udezue, Abigail French, Sophie Thomas (Headteacher)

2019/20 Meeting Dates -  11th September, 14th November, 27th February, 23rd June.

2. Resources:

Scope - responsible for overseeing the financial performance of the school and ensuring its money is well spent.

Membership - Matt Greenall (Chair), Jill Fairbrother, Sue Coleman, Sophie Thomas (Headteacher)

2019/20 Meeting Dates - 13th September, 5th November, 14th January, 10th March, 22nd June.

3. Human Resources:

Scope - responsible for ensure the effective and efficient performance management of staff.

Membership - Fran Beckett (Chair), Oli Mudge, Ed Lawrence, Sophie Thomas (Headteacher)

2019/20 Meeting Dates - 18th September, 4th November, 24th February, 15th June.

NB - The newly agreed governance structure meant that the former Ethos Committee disbanded at the end of the 2018/19 school year.    For the most part, the scope of the Ethos Committee has been absorbed by the Full Governing Body; the rationale being that ethos, Christian distinctiveness, vision values and strategic direction is a core function of the whole Governing Board.

Some Governors also sit on Panels, including:

  • Head Teacher Appraisals
  • Admissions - as a church school, the Governing Body is the Admissions Authority, which involves setting admissions arrangements for the school and agreeing admissions applications.

There are also Governors with special responsibility including Safeguarding with Child Protection, Health and Safety, Pupil Performance (Data Analysis), Safer Recruitment and SEN with Equalities and Training.

There is a high priority for Governors to attend training sessions organised by both Brighton & Hove Local Authority and the Diocese, to ensure they are able to carry out their role effectively.

There is an expectation for all governors to visit the school during the year to become familiar with school improvement priorities e.g. follow up staff presentations on curriculum development, equality, behaviour and learning. Governors also place a high priority on communicating with the school community and attend parent/teacher evenings and other school events, including the annual summer fair.

Vacancies

Co-opted Governor Vacancy - Human Resources & Personnel

St Andrew’s CE Primary School has a vacancy for a co-opted governor.  As a voluntary aided school, the governing body is the employer.  As a large and growing school, we are looking to appoint a governor with experience in the field of Human Resources and Personnel.  The governor will be required to sit on a dedicated HR Committee which is responsible for holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, “and the effective and efficient performance management of staff”.  This includes many aspects relating to pay and personnel.

Further details, including information on how to apply, is detailed in the Co-opted Governor Vacancy Advert.  If you would like to know more about this vacancy, you can get in touch with Co-Chair of Governors, Oliver Mudge: olivermudge@st-andrews.brighton-hove.sch.uk.

If you are interested in becoming a governor in the future or finding out more about what we do, please contact the Senior Clerk to the Governors, Belle Howard - BelleHoward@st-andrews.brighton-hove.sch.uk

Meetings

The Full Governing Body meets at least once every half term and sometimes extra meetings are necessary. These meetings are where we discuss school direction, planning and strategy. Full Governing Body meetings for the 2019/20 academic year will be held at 5:30pm on the following dates:

  • 24th September 2019
  • 26th November 2019
  • 28th January 2020
  • 24th March 2020
  • 12th May 2020
  • 7th July 2020

Minutes of previous meetings can be found below. The Constitution of Governing Bodies in Maintained Schools (August 2015) requires governing bodies to publish individual governors' attendance at meetings in the last year. For ease of reference we have provided this by giving details of and those who were not in attendance at each meeting:
